Smith Myers – the designers and manufacturers of Artemis, the award-winning mobile phone detection system– are the latest company to confirm their commitment to Multi-Mission Expo.

Celebrating ’35 years of engineering excellence’, Smith Myers are key innovators in the Search and Rescue (SAR) sphere and have over three decades of experience in the design, development, manufacture and support of application-specific cellular network and handset capabilities. Founded in 1987 by joint Managing Directors Peter Myers and Tony Smith, the company are experts in Protocol Stacks, Software Defined Radio, Digital Signal Processing and Wideband Linear RF Power Amplifiers; all of which are developed and manufactured in-house at the company’s Bedfordshire headquarters.

Smith Myers work with leading international SAR operators and major aircraft manufacturers to ‘support and develop new and innovate products’, all of which are rigorously tested for an extensive variety of environmental extremes a natural disaster or SAR mission might require.

One such pioneering product is Artemis, a ‘cellular signal location technology for the challenging SAR environment’ which can essentially turn any mobile phone into a rescue beacon; a task it was specifically designed for. “We’re not taking someone else’s receivers or software and repurposing it,” explains Peter Myers. If a phone is switched on, it can be easily located to within 100m (utilizing just two antennas and a single transceiver) at a range of up to 35km.

Employed as a standalone system or integrated with other sensors into an aircraft mission system, Artemis can “add tremendous value to any existing platform with EO/IR cameras,” he adds. “Night missions can be undertaken with a high possibility of a rapid positive outcome.” This mission-enhancing capability has already been adopted by the Royal Norwegian Air Force, who integrated Artemis into their SAR Queen fleet of Leonardo AW101 helicopters two years ago, and recently were quoted as saying Artemis was used on 80% of their SAR missions.

Smith Myers will be welcoming visitors at Multi-Mission Expo, more information on the company can be found at www.smithmyers.com
